H. Cray Has been retained to ride Mr T. H. Lowry’s horses at the Trentham meeting. Gray has also accepted are trainer from Mr H. B. Troutibeck to rido for him for tho season.
Apropos of Gray’s spill on Tho Golfer at Masterton, it appears that after tho field had gone a furlsing or so Gray found himself in a rather grave position. Having a clear vision he discerned that if he went on ho would force a horse on the outside of him over the rails with possible dire results to the rider. Gray, with true .sporting instinct. held the grey up, regardless or tho consequences to himself, and the horse "pecked,” and Gray, after kneeling in the saddle, oame down. It was a matter of Gray or tho boy in front of him and Gray chose himself as the victim.
Mr L. M. Isitt. M.P.. who does not appear to be very much enamoured of racing, or any other sport for that matter, suggested to the Minister for Defence in the House yesterday that tire police should make a thorough canvass of all racecourses in order to ascertain whether patrons ih'ad complied with the Military Service Act so far as it applies to registration. Sir James Allen replied that the matter had been under the consideration of Cabinet, and the authorities had been instructed to take action in the direction indicated. Maybe the racecourse is not tho only place where defaulters will be ftuud. a s in 98 cases out of every hundred those who patronise racing are sportsmen of the highest quality. There are places where there is not so much excitement and glamour that a few dozen deserters might be roped in. Winners at tho Masterton meeting have incurred tho following penalties in events on the opening day at Trentham : Rimiiifcaka Handicap—lmpediment (7iib), 8.5; Arrow fie Id (71b), 7.11.
