EDUCATIONAL WATTERS
MEETING OF N.Z. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE. The Wellington branch of the Now Zealand tliucational Institute held a meeting hay evening, at which Mr ■V McKenzie presided, proposed remits ior submission to tho annual conference of the institute were considered. A morion bv Mr H. A. Parkinson, as follows, was" l ist’"That quota marts, havingseried their purpose in the initiation of the grading scnome, should bo gradually eliminated from the scale.” Mr A. N. burns moved, and Mr rosier seconded, the toilowing motion; “That the N.Z.E.I. should endeavour to impress upon the National Government tho great importance of providing improved educational iacilitios,_ and that the Government bo urged, _ during 1918, ro provide adequate funds lor■■ (liSchool buildings; (2) playgrounds; (3) a suiiicient number ox inspectors to enable the" work of advising and assisting teachers to bo satisfactorily canned out; (4) medical inspection; (5) free dental treatment for children of the public schools; (6) technical school buildings; (7) compulsory continuation classes; (8) conveyance of children to central schools.” A member stated that the Government should bo made to realise the deplorable condition of affairs by informing the public through the press of inadequate educational facilities. Tho following remits were discussed; “That in any system of compulsory education after the age of 14 years it is important to emphasise social training for the duties of citizenship, as well as vocational training.” (Miss N. E. Goad.) “That the Education Act bo so amended as to empower teachers to elect their own representatives to all controlling educational bodies/* (Miss N. -E- Goad.) The following tonics on whfch remits were passed at the last annual meeting of the N.Z.E.I. were reaffirmed:—<l) Abolition of District Education Boards and. establishment of a National Board; <2) extension of school age; (3) increased floor space; (4) consolidation of schools; (5) payment on grading; (6) appointments by the department; ( 7 ) teachers to know their grading marks; (8; establishment of a departmental store for tho supplying of school requisites; (9) subsidised schools; (10) compulsory membership.
