Mr Jefferies writes that there arc prospects of the fiercest fighting yet on the Dainsizza Plateau. The enemy’s artillery fire is heavier, and more distributed, while reinforcements for the Austrians from tho Russian front are more intense. Airmen report that tho roads aro filled with troops unci material. The Austrians aro also reinforcin'- - on tl.u Ison/.o from the Trentino. Tho Hon. J. Cook has announced that the minesweepers’ operations havo revealed tho existence of a minefield five miles south of Gabo Island (at tho eastern extremity of the coast of Victoria). It has been laid in deep water, in an open situation, and probably some of tuio mines have dragged from their original positions. Long operations will be necessary to ensure that all tho mines are destroyed. Mr Cook warns shipping that there is no danger provided tha-tr masters carefully adhere to their rout© orders. Lieutenant Fonck. a comrade of Captain Guynemer, the famous airman, avenged his death on September 30th. Ho shot down Wissman, the Gorman air pilot- who drowned Guynemer. Lieutenant Fonck escaped the Germans’ first rush by clever manoeuvring, and got behind the Germans, and shot Wissman in tho head. Tho German, machine fell, and Wissman’s observe, was also killed. Captain Guynemer was one of tho greatest of tho French air pilots and one of tho most successful in bringing down tho enemy machines.
