Mr S. E. McCarthy S.M., yesterday delivered judgment in the case in which the Public Health Department proceeded against Bertha Wardle, farmer, for selling milk alleged to be adulterated with water. The defendant has a dairy farm at Karori, and was one of a number of suppliers to the Wellington Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative Association, Ltd., the mdk being carried by lorry to the city. The defence was that there was no proof that the defendant had added the water; that the sale was made to the Wellington Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative Association ; and that when the sample was taken the milk was no longer the property of the defendant. The magistrate ruled that these contentions could not hold. The defendant was fined £25, and ordered to pay costs. £2 19s 6d. Mr J. Prcndeville, of the Crown Law Office, appeared for the department, and Mr F. W. Jackeon for defendant. Private Nelson R. Skinner, whose death in action in Prance has been, advised, was formerly employe,! in the Wellington harbourmaster's office. He then went over to Svdney and joined the Commonwealth Forces, and had been on active service fox about nine months when ho was killed. Private Skinner’s widowed mother resides in Wellinston.
