BOILERMAKERS’ DISPUTE
A SETTLEMENT REACHED. At the meeting held last week between the representatives of the Boilermakers’ Union and the employers, a deadlock was reached on the question of wages, but Mr W. H. Hagger, the Conciliation Commissioner, put forward suggestions that the union members should bo further consulted before Arbitration Court proceedings were taken. This course was taken, and a meeting of the union on Saturday night agreed to proposals which have since received the approval of the employers’ assessors. The terms are: Journeymen’s wages to be increased from Is 4id to Is per hour. A proviso is that labourers shall not be employed cutting out rivets if there are boilermakers available. Apprentices’ wages are to be increased by is 6d nor week in the first to the fourth year, and 5s in the fifth year, with an additional increase of 3s 6d in the fourth and fifth years, provided the apprentice obtains a first-grade certificate in mechanical engineering, in the City and Guilds of London Institute. Other conditions are as in the old award. The new one will come into force on October 14th and operate for two years.
