Referring to the problem of dost prevention in his annual report, the Christchurch city surveyor, Mr A. D. Dobson, says: “It is admitted by all municipal engineers that watering is a merely temporary expedient for dust prevention. If water is used sparingly it dries very quickly, if used freely it turns tho dust into mud and forms puddles which motor wheels quickly wash out into pot-holes; this is the ; experience everywhere with waterbound macadam. Coating the top of the road with tar is a great advance upon watering or sprinkling with any of tho other liquids which are sometimes used, for the reason that under favourable conditions surface wear is almost entirely arrested and the formation of dust prevented. As regards dust, tar-painted roads can be classed with asphaltum surfaces. They are easily washed and dry quickly. Provided the road surface is properly formed, duly crowned and level, and tho tar-painting is properly carried out, tar-painting offers the best and cheapest known prevention of the dust problem for streets and roads subject to light or only moderate heavy traffic. It would result in a great saving Doth in metalling and watering if all the suitable road surfaces in Christchurch were tar-painted, and I would strongly recommend tho council to tar-paint as much as possible.”
