KAUANGAROA TRAGEDY
BENNIES, COMMITTED FOR TRIAL Pres* Association. ■ WANGANUI, October 12. Frank Bennier appeared before the court to-day, charged with iihe wilful murder of his wife, one- of the victims of the Eauangaroa tragedy. The evidence was similar to that given at the coroner’s inquest, where a verdict equivalent to wilful murder was returned. It was shown that Bennier in the early hours of the morning attacked seven sleeping people with an axe, his wife succumbing to her injuries. Witnesses stated that Bermier was addicted to drink, and was not on friendly terms with his wife owing to his drinking habits. Sergeant Bourke said thait on one occasion Bennier, when slightly under the influence of liquor, called at the police station to ask police assistance to make has wife return to him. Witness said the police could not interfere and Bennier threatened ‘Ho do for her” and also himself. Accused was committed far trial at the Supreme Court on the main charge, and also on charges of attemsvted murder of the other victims.
