Comprehensive instructions to master mariners, relative to precautions to be taken in the danger zones, are published in yesterday’s “Gazette.” Emphasis is laid on the importance of tho maintenance in working order of watertight bulkhead doors, and the keeping of them closed; bilge pumps must also be kept in an efficient state; tbe lower openings in the ship’s 'rides must be kept closed unless indispensable for the ship’s working; the prevention of smoke by careful choking is mentioned, and plugs must bo kept ready to fill shell-holes. Passengers must be berthed as far as possible on the upper deck, and are recommended to wear their life-jackets’. Lifeboats are to be ke.pt hoisted outboard ready for immediate lowering, and tho rafts, which are to be kept ready for immediate release, should be sufficient to accommodate 50 per cent, of the total number of persons on board.
