THE SWEETZER CASE
OFFICERS’ SUPPLIES SENT FROM THE CAMPS. , The following question to the Minister for Defence was given notice of some Lays ago by Mr J. Payne, M.P. for Grey Lynn,'“Whether there is any arrangement existing Between the Defence Department and the officers who live within a. few miles’ radius of the camps to send coal, provisions, groceries' or household requisites from tho camps to their homes.- and, if so, what are the conditions under which Government property can be thus made available for the private use of the/officcrs in their households, and what prices are paid for the goods?” The bon. member added that he had in bis possession a telegram dated September 12tb, 1917, sent from Trentham Military Camp, reading as follows: “Major Swcetzor, Lower Hutt. —Consigned to you this day per passenger train two boxes groceries.—Lieut. Carrosso, Trentham, ” In a printed reply circulated yesterday Sir James Allen stated: “Married members of the camp staff whose homes axe in till.© vicinity .of the camp may purchase, supplies, and such supplies are charged for at landed cost at camp, plusi 15 pet cent, administrative charges, ®nd additional charges, for any cartage •from Army Service Corps store. In tho case brought to notice, two consignments were sent to Major Swooizor, the first fn July, consisting of groceries and coal, for which payment was received on August 14th, the second in September, consisting of groceries only, an account for which was rendered on October 4th. The telegram has been charged to the purchaser.”
