The divorce law in Great Britain is in many respects very defective, but no success has attended any of the attempts made in comparatively recent times to remedy its anomalies. There was lately set up, however, a joint Parliamentary Committee, which has drafted a short bill somewhat on the lines of a bill promoted in -iDOa by the Divorce Law Reform Union. The Union’s bill, which was printed, but which never got beyond that stage, aimed chiefly at converting all separation decrees and orders into absolute decrees of divorce after a period of five years on the application- of either party. The new measure produced by ther Joint Committee proposes the same remedy, with the difference that three years shall be the period in which a separation shall mature to the point of divorce. It is also proposed that purely voluntary separation extending over three years shall entitle the parties to a dissolution of the marriage. Charles BonfieM Godhard, a welleducated young man, appeared on remand at the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., yesterday on four charges of obtaining goods by false pretences. The accused, who had obtained clothing from Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., to the value of £24, goods valued at £5 from George and Kexsley’s, and similar articles, valued at £3 16s, from the D.1.C., had pleaded guilty to the offences when brought before Mr S. EMcCarthy, S.M., a week ago. Godhard tod served as a soldier on Gallipoli, and after his discharge from the Imperial Forces came to , Australia. He accepted an appointment as an assistant master at a college in Christchurch, had a disagreement with the headmaster, and came to Wellington. Mr H. F. O’Leary, who appeared for the accused, said to had communicated with Goddard's friends in Australia, and the money was being forwarded to pay for the goods, the majority of which had been recovered. The Bench convicted and ordered the defendant to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that the money for the goods was refunded, Woods' Great Peppermint Cure, 1/6, Fox Bronchial Goughs, lake.
