THE OLD AND LAME

To'the Editor “ N.Z. Times.” Sir, —Your sub-leader of the 21st, headed “In a Tight Comer,” is to be commended for the fearless and outspoken exposure of the so-called apostles of truth, purity, justice, and lovers of the “square deal,” in refusing an ' application for a section of land, ' one of the reasons being the man was old and lame, notwithstanding that he had three strong sons able and willing to work it. ' You stated you had yet to learn if it was a crime in this country to be old. I will go one more and ask is it also a crime to be lameP Also is it likely that at the next election these self-styled Reformers will tell the old and lame they do not want their votes? Oh, dear no. That is another matter No doubt we shall read in the squatters’ organ that Mr So-and-so, the Reform candidate, addressed the inmatesof certain Homes (much to the amusement of his chief), promising, if elected “a square deal” to all, including the old and lame. I hope, sir, when the time comes the old and lame, who have become so in assisting to make this beautiful country as it is, will rise up and spurn such, political cant and hypocrisy. 1 am,etc., CRUTCHES. Wellington, February 27th.
