Plenty of men are still offering at both works, and another batch is being ailoted “hooks” this morning. A meeting of slaughtermen was held at Petone on Tuesday night and the position discussed. It was stated yesterday that a conference between the Canterbury slaughtermen and their employers was to be held at Christchurch with a view to work bemg resumed at 27s 6d per hundred, but so far no information is to hand on this subject. SUGGESTED NEW UNION. In regard to the formation of a now Slaughtermen’s Union, it is stated the Crown Law Officers are at present considering the position. Mr M. J. Reardon informed a “Times” representative yesterday that before such could he done, seeing there tvas already a union in existence, the sanction of the Arbitration Court would have to be obtained. The Labour Department had had the application for registration in its possession a fortnight and had failed to notify him as required by the Act.
