BATTLE OF BOTHASBERG

To tho Editor “N.Z. Times.” Sir, —Concerning Colonel Porter’s remarks published in Monday’s “New Zealand Times,” 'permit me to add the following additional contribution: I was with Colonel Porter through a portion of the Maori war, and I must always think of him as a gallant officer. My nephew took part in the Bothasberg engagement, and told me that Bert Russell fell riddled with bullets. Bert, Russell was a son of a schoolmate of mine, and was bora at Opotiki, Bay of Plenty. He volunteered from the ranks of the Permanent Artillery to join the Seventh Contingent. I feel proud of him as a New Zealander.—l am, etc., WALTER DELANEY. Wellington, February 25th.
