EARTHQUAKES ON WEST COAST

“PANDEMONIUM LET LOUSE.” Press Association. WESTPORT, February 25. From 8 yesterday morning till 11.3 U Ast night the community was not disturbed by earth shocks. At 11.3'J there was a repetition of tho dull boom vith a little vibration. At x2.x7 a.m. there was another cannonade and very pronounced shaking. No damage was lone by any of the numerous shocks since the lively couple of minutes at 12.36 on Saturday. The origin of the disturbances is plainly to tho south-west of Westport. It must be relatively close, too, as no damage was done at Greymouth on the one side and only the initial shock was felt at Earomea on tho other side. Tho colliers describe Saturday’s experience as pandemonium lot loose. Women and children throughout the district were unnerved. EXPERIENCE OF A STEAMER. AUCKLAND, February 25. While the steamer ilatoa, from Westport to Auckland, was off Westport at 12.33 o’clock on Saturday, she was lifted by a submarine disturbance and shaken from stem to stern. The sensation was as though the steamer had been raised from under, and was scraping her way over a derelict. The shook lasted four seconds, hut had no appreciable effect on the sea. Captain Norton is of opinion that the centre of the seismic disturbance was out to sea.
