INVERCARGILL ATHENÆUM
Press Association. INVERCARGILL, February 24. A meeting of subscribers to the local Athenaeum this evening rejected a proposal to hand the institution over to the Town Council with a view of making it a free public reading room and ultimately a free library. The council had previously declined to undertake that the library would bo free, as the rates would have had to contribute from £GOO to £BOO per. annum for its maintenance.
