Lord Willingdon, recently appointed Governor of Bombay, is a son-in-law of that sturdy veteran Liberal peer, Earl Brassey, upon whose staff he served as A.D.C. when his lordship was Governor of Victoria. In 1900, as Mr Freeman-Thomas, Lord Willingdon was elected Liberal member for Hastings, a seat held by him till 1906. The fortune of war was, however, against him, and he was one of the very few Liberals to lose his seat in the triumphant 1906 overthrow of Toryism. Lord Willingdon takes his title from Willingdon, where his property, Hatton, is situated. When at Eton he was in the same house, though not in the same year, with Mr George Wyndham, and among his other contemporaries there were Mr Tl J. Lucas, air H. J. Tennant, and Sir J. S. Maxwell.
