STEAMERS REPORT A ROUGH TIME AT SEA. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, February 23. Weather conditions have been_ extremely wintry since Thursday night. A sou’wester has been blowing for the past three days, and there has been an unusually heavy rainfall. There was almost a continuous downpour of rain throughout Thursday night and all day Friday. ... On Friday night the wind freshened to a strong gale, hut it moderated yesterday morning, although ram fell more or less continuously all day. The gale was general all along the coast, and steamers arriving at Lyttelton on Saturday reported having had a fairly rough time, with thick weather and heavy rain at sea. The big steamer Tyrone, which left Wellington at noon on Friday, was over twenty hours oh the passage to Lyttelton, and the tramp steamer Cape Finisterre, which sailed from Wellington at 4.15 p.m. did not arrive until close on 2 p.m. The Hnddart-Parker steamer Victoria also had a long and dirty passage from (Wellington to Lyttelton. The weather cleared yesterday afternoon. but to-day rain is almost continuous and the weather is cold. HEAVY RAINFALL IN TIMARP. TIMARU, February 23. Between two and three inches of rain has fallen during the last two days, which must have an injurious effect on the harvest. Much crop is in stock and to be stocked, and there are many cases where stocks shattered by the galo ten days ago have not been restocked, while the paddocks will bo soft for tbe reaper when the standing corn dries. On the other hand, rain was needed for turnips.
