AFTERNOON TEA

On Saturday afternoon Mrs Wilton gave a handkerchief tea at her home in Mount street to Miss Gladys Meadowcroft, whose marriage to Mr D. Owen, of Auckland, takes place next Thursday. There were a great many guests present, most of them young girl friends of the bride-elect, and a very jolly time was spent. The floral decorations were of the bridal order, white flowers and maidenhair fern in silver vases, with strands of white ribbon and silver horseshoe about. Miss Meadowcroft received many pretty linen gifts, including a few dainty lace handkerchiefs. During the afternoon there were some fine gramophone selections given, and several of the guests contributed items. Misses Carter and Batten sang, Miss M. Meadowcroft played, and Miss S. Reading recited. A competition was held, in which each guest was required to sew the outline of an .animal OH to cloth. For this difficult task Miss Tudor Jones received first prize, and Miss Devine second. The hostess wore u mauve silk frock, and Miss G. Wilson was in embroidered white muslin over pale blue. The guest of honour was in white accordion pleated voile, with a coatee of hand-made lace with touches of black velvet, and a large white hat with long plumes. Mrs Meadowcroft wore deep green silk and embroidery; Miss F. Meadowcroft, palest eau-de-nil, with touches of pale pink, and a pink and green 'hat; Miss Mavis Meadowcroft wore pale grey. Among the guests were Mrs Jeffreys, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Miller, and the Misses Grange, Batten, Myers, Sievwright, C. Glasson, Smith (2), Turnbull, I. Baker, H. Crawford, Tudor Jones (Auckland), Roskruge, Devine, Reading, etc.
