GEN. GODLEY & CONSCRIPTION
(To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) Sir,- —1 see by the papers that the gaoling and fining of boys who refuse to undergo military training still continues, , and I also see that MajorGeneral Godley is still commandant of the forces. This reminds me that 1 have seen it stated in one of the papers , that Major-General Godley stated at a public meeting “that if there was to be anything in the nature of conscription or compulsion about the scheme he would resign his position and go back to England,” although how the scheme oouid be carried out without something in the nature of conscription and compulsion about it is hard to understand. It is evident, however, that there has been a good deal in the nature of conscription and . compulsion about the scheme, so that if Major-General Godley stated what ho is reported to have done, although as I was not at the meeting I have no first hand knowledge of that, it would appear that he has not so far been as good as his word in the matter. —I am, etc., , ' JUSTICE.
