Australian wheat on the spot is quoted at 40s Gd per quarter of 4961b —last quotation 40s to 40s 6d. Flour.—The market is steady. AustraLain patent brands on the spot ex store per sack of 2801 b 2Sb —last price 27a 9d. Oats.—The market is slow. La Plata, February-March shipment, Xsa 10id per quarter of 3041b—Jd lower. The Bank of England discount rat® remains at 5 per cent., to which it was raised on October 17th. A year ago th® rate was 3i per cent. The Bank of France rate is 4 per cent, (since October 17th), and that of the Imperial Bank of Germany 6 per cent, (since November 14th). The open market rate of discount for best three months bills is unchanged at 4i per cent.; a year ago it was 3 7-16. Short loans are unchanged to 5s easier at per cent.; twelve months ago the quotation waa 3f to 3J. In Paris the open market discount rate is & 6d lower at 3Jd per cent. (SJ a year ago). while in Berlin it is 2s 6a higher at 5) per cent. (3J a year ago). SOUTHERN GRAIN MARKETS Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, February 21. "Wheat.—The market is firm and steady, and the quantity offering is not large. Both millers and merchants are free buyers of any lines that are offering, quotations being: Tuscan 3s sd, Hunter's 3s sid, and pearl 3s 6d to 3s l>Jd at country stations. The rain that is falling at the time of writing will interrupt threshing operations for some days and check the offerings. Oats axe inclined to be easier, as merchants have now secured stocks, and at present they are not finding an- outlet. Thera is a considerable quantity offering, but growers are not disposed to accept present quotations, and sales have net been easy to effect. A little business has been done in new chaff at 555, but growers are now asking 60s at country stations. Business is fairly quiet in other lines of grain and produce.
