KING DICK’S CONSORT
Citizens who ere able to do so might well assist the Zoological Society to retain the lioness at the Newtown “Zoo” as a permanent inmate of that institution. Messrs Wirth Bros, have generously loaned this handsome beast for a given term, now nearing its expiry, after which she is to be returned to them, to go back to the menagerie and the circus ring, or she is to be purchased for £IOO. This figure does not appear at all immoderate under any circumstances, but there are special considerations making the offer really a bargain. The lioness has given birth to two cubs, so that if they and their dam are retained wo shall in due course have quite a den of lions. Moreover, the magnificent and majestic King Dick would be likely to suffer considerably in captivity if his mate should be taken away. These specimens of the king of beasts, types of animal life in one of its most striking and picturesque forms, have given a very great deal of diversion to many thousands of residents and visitors. They certainly constitute one of the chief attractions in the commendable and growing collection at Newtown park a collection which has a distinct and extensive value as a practical educator of the rising generation. L'he City Council has helped the Zoological Society with a vote of £25 towards the sum required to buy the lioness, and the small amount still to be collected ought to be readily forthcoming. The object is, in our view, one to be cordially supported. What is wanted is practical assistance, and the time available is short. It is sincerely to be hoped that everybody will not leave this matter to evervbody else.
