POPULATION STATISTICS
The, report of the New South Wales Acting-Government Statistician,. Mir ti.. A. Smith, for 1912 shows that on December Slst the population of th© metropolitan area was 694,800- Of this number the city contained 116,400, and the suburbs 578,000- The increase during the year was 38,000, The city population, largely owing to the demolition SI condemned dwellings, decreased by 400, and the suburban population was [added to by 40,400. The number of marriages during the year was 8923. This total is no fewer than 1283 in [excess of the figures for the previous [year and is the highest marriage rate •yet recorded, being 23 per cent, above the previous five years’ average. The births numbered 20,140, which is also itha highest rate ever recorded in the metropolis, and is 14. per cent, above Ahe average. There were 7681 deaths. This rate is above that for the previous year, and is 8 per cent, above the average for the previous five years, which, however, were all years of exceptionally low mortality, ■
