SUBURBAN POULTRY YARDS
.There are ■ thousands Of persons whose poultry are limited to the back yard; It should be remembered that keeping fowls on such small areas year after year r&iiltS in the apiL becoming impregnated with disease germs. Then -.when, the fowls are tick unto death or else dead their owner writes to the newspaper to know the cause of the trouble. The old adage, prevention is better 'than cure, has been disregarded, add ' the inexorable penalty has to be paid. ■ In some cases it is sheer carelessness or laziness .that is responsible for sour and dirty fowl yards. The houses are seldom or never limewashed. This easy method of disinfection should be done thoroughly at least 1 twice a year. In fhe middle of summer, this cleansing is indispensable. The limewash should bo applied hot, and some carbonic mixed with it. Not -less than once a year the back yard should get a good covering with ■ freshly' slaked lime, and should then. he spaded over to the depth' of six or nine inches.
