Stanford reached Carey Bay (Port Chalmers) on Monday night with a cargo ot timber from'Puget Sound, which port the vessel left on December 11th. The passage was practically a fine one until the vessel reached the vicinity of Banks Peninsula, where . she encountered the fierce sou’-wester which blew during the latter part of last week. The vessel-was doing well, and promised to come out of the gale unscathed -when a mountainous sea lept over the stern. The boat which hung in the,stern davits was smashed. The companionway was damaged, and the cabin flooded to a depth of several feet. It seemed as though the vessel’s stern had dropped out, but the set back, though stupifying, was only momehtarlr. and presently, the vessel was again holding her own doggedly. - No . more mishaps occurred. , The . harquentine is owned in San Francisco. , HAWKEfS BAY AT MELBOURNE. Bannatyne and Co. received cable advice that the Tyser liner Hawke’s Bay arrived at‘Melbourne'yesterday after a good passage of forty-one days from London.
