SOCIAL ITEMS. By *'Eileen.” February 16. Miss Maud Brewer (WavexioyJ, who has been spending a few weeks in Wanganui, has returned home. Mr and Mrs Raney Jackson, who have been on an extended trip to the Old Country, returned to Wanganui last wwee. Mrs Pop© (Wellington) spent a few days in town last week. Mrs Ballanca left for the south last week. Mr and Mrs Austin (Auckland) are •visiting' friends in Wanganui. Mrs R. McGrowther has returned from her trip to the Thames. Mr O. W. Poyliter (Alarybank) has returned from heir holiday visit to Nelson. Mr and Mrs Jim Turner (nee Miss Vida Oockbum) have returned to Wanganui after their trip to Australia, Miss Chorritt (Girls' College) has returned to Wanganui. Miss E. Turner returned home last week after an extended holiday spent in Auckland. ■ . On Sunday morning the United Fire Brigade Association of the Dominion attended the various churches in full uniform. They were headed by the Garrison Band. The fire fighters numbered dose on TOO. 650 of whom attended Christ Church. The remainder, headed by the City Band, attended the Presbyterian and other churches. .At both churches the bands played the ''Dead March” in “Saul” as a tribute to the tote Captain Scott and his tears party. The vicar. Rot. Reeve, delivered » most impressive sermon. •. After church service the association delegates and firemen were tendered a civic welcome by his Worship the Mayor (Mr C. B. Kackay) and the member for the district, Mr Veitch. On Sunday afternoon the firemen and ■friends were taken to Castlecliff, where they wore entertained at afternoon tea. There must have been some thousands present. In the evening Mr Will Jameson, the popular manager for Hayward's and the Royal Pictures, gave a benefit concert for the widow and' family of Fireman Tt-i.h, of Palmerston North. The building was crowded, and the handsome sum Of £3* odd was handed over by Mr Jametakali This popular manager deserves more than a word of praise for the many kindly acts done by; him. ~ . On Monday night ;a monster torchlight precession took place. The fire appliances being prettily decorated, the procession will not soon be forgotten by all Trim witnessed it. , The Ctarrison and City Bands also .took part. To-day (Tuesday) the ratteens’ luncheon to the aeecr elation takes place at Dustins, Ltd., and to-morrow and Thursday the big public demonstration takes place in Cook’s Gar-. while on Friday a piomo up river ie tendered the visitors.
