FIREMEN AT PLAY
COMPETITIONS AT WANGANUI. Press Association. WANGANUI, February 19. The Fire Brigades competitions were commenced to-day in glorious weather. The entries are exceptionally heavy, being a record for the Dominion. Following are the results so far: Ladder Race (one man). —Booth (Oamaru), 8 2-sscc, 1; Peters (Hawera), 8 4-ssec, 2; McTinsley (Invercargill Railway), 8 3-osec, 8; Armit (Roslyn), Bsec, 4; Bain (Spit), 8 8-osec, 5; Duncan (Dunedin City), 8 4-ssec, 6. In the first run-off Oamaru and Hawera led with 7 3-ssec, the others coming next with 7 4-ssec, and the above times are the results of the runs-off of ties. Manual Engine (five men). —Timaru, Imin Bsec, 1; Carterton, Imin 13sec, 3; Masterton, Imin 15 345 s ec, 3; Spit, Imin 20sec, 4; Rangiora, Imin 20 4-5 sec, 5; Dunedin City, Imin 21 4-6 sec, 6. Hose and Hydrant (three men). — Timaru, 31 4-ssec, 1; Dannevirke, 23 2-ssec, 2. Dunedin City and Gisborne are to run off for third place. Coupling Event (two men). —Dannevirke, 39sec, 1; Timaru, 41 l-osec, 2; Patea, 44sec, 3. Also competed— Napier (6sec penalty) 50 l-ssec, Hastings 53sec. Patea and Napier had to run off for their respective places. In the disabled hose event for five men. Hillside Railway (Imin 12 2-ssec), Hastings (Imin 15 3-ssec), and Alexandra (Imin 17 l-ssec) are the best so
