MATCH MAKERS
DISPUTE SATISFACTORILY SETTLED. A complete settlement of the puto in tn© match trad© was arrived at yesterday before a formal Conciliation Council over which Air P. Hally presided. The terms of the settlement will bo embodied in an award which will come into operation as from ivlurcii Ist next, and run for three years. The main differences between the parties were in respect to wages ana preference only. It was stated yesterday that so far as prevailing hours of labour, holidays, and sanitary arrangements of the factory were concerned nothing more was to be desired. In the matter of wages, especially piece work, good wages had obtained for some years past. Tho new agreement ensures a continuation of tho present piecework rates of pay, and prevents the introduction of time work in any department where piecework pay at present is in force- For workers on tune work a slight increase has been obtained by the union. Tho preference clause agreed on provides for the employment of non-nnionists for a period of throe weeks, and allows the union thereafter to request such non-unionists to beoomo and remain members of the union. The clause is conditional on the union keeping an “open door.” All tho terms were agreed to conditionally on the recommendation of the assessors being made an award of the Arbitration Court.
