THE SLAUGHTERMEN

Improvement, as far as the tally is concerned, is still reported at the Gear works, Petone. Yesterday over 2000 sheep and lambs were slaughtered. There are between sixty and seventy butchers operating on the “board.” On Tuesday a start was made with the killing of cattle. One gang was put on and tho carcases were treated in a satisfactory manner. The~ number of bodies treated yesterday and on Tuesday was twenty each day. This number fulfils all requirements, and further butchers on the beef “board” are not required at present. Strict inquiries show that the work done in both slaughtering sheds is equal to any accomplished in past seasons, though the rat© of killing is of course slower. FACTORIES WORKING QUIETLY. Press Association- . CHRISTCHURCH, February 19. The meat factories are working quietly, and the managers claim to be fully satisfied with the work of free labour. There is a rumour that the unionists are willing to return if the free labourers are dismissed, but the officials say they have no information to make public on the intentions of the union. TIMARU, February 19. The boards of the two local freezing works are filling up, and the days’ tallies gradually increasing. The' work is being done in a satisfactory manner.
