NOTES AND COMMENTS
Several of tho riders at the Woodvillo meeting yesterday were on the carpet as ■ tiio result of reports by Mr McMahon, the stipendiary steward. Peg, who won the Publicans’ Handicap at Dunedin yesterday, is . by Charlemagne 11-—Cora Lynn, and has been a most consistent performer recently. She won the Trial Plate ax the recent Wellington meeting. The track at Wingatui must have been fast yesterday, both Tannhauser and Nightwatch putting up records in the races they won. Among the winners at the Tasmanian Turf Club’s summer meeting was Lanfranc, by San Francisco —Miss Gladys, who annexed the Trial Handicap. He is a half-brother to Gladsome, Gladstone, and Apologue, and a full-brother to Seal Bock and St. Francis. The last named was purchased by Mr T. EL Lowry for 300 guineas at the last yearling sales in Sydney. On Saturday last another Multiform colt, Arramform, scored at the Victoria Amateur Turf dub’s meeting. Ho was bred by Mr W. Brown, who pmchased Multiform at the Stead dispersal sale for 3750gns, and is from Arrowroot, an English-bred mare
whose pedigree traces back to Semal,na, dam of Donovan, winner of the Epsom Derby in 1889. So far from severing his association with tho turf, King George starts ibis season with 19 horses in training. Of these four are three-year-olds, nine two-year-olds, and the remainder four-year-olds and upwards. However, there is said to be but little chance of His Majesty scoring a classic victory with his three-year-olds, and if any event of real importance is credited aim it may be per medium of the two-year-olds. J. tiennah purchased The Great Mogul from Mr T. H. Lowry last week, and the gelding is now quartered at Greenmeadows. Tho Great Mogul is a full-brother to CuUinan, Kohinoor and Star and Garter, being by Roya! iTiislleer out of Bijou. Hennah had intended turning Golden Sky out, as sho is growing at a great rate, and had made all arrangements to have her spelled at Te Mahanga station, but the daughter of San Fran and Fairy Gold will still be one of the regulars at Napier Park. Borosov, who dead-heated with Mala in tho Oakleigh Plate for second place at the V.A.T.C. meeting on Saturday, is from Beresina, who was bred by Mr J. F. Reid at Ellerslie. Beresina is by Stepniak—Ambush, and raced in the colours of the late Mr G. G. Stead, but was subsequently taken to Australia by Mr D. J. Price. Strangely enough she won the Oakleigh Plate in 1907. The three-year-old colt Prince Soult, by Soult Lady—Hester, has been a failure this season, but he is reported to be shaping satisfactorily in his work at Ellerslie, and hopes are entertained that he will show a return to his best form before the conclusion of the autumn meetings. It is rumoured that the Wellington Cup winner Sir Solo is to be taken to Australia to compete in autumn events. Tannhauser, winner of the Dunedin Cup yesterday, is a iour-year-old gelding by Martian—Grand Opera, and therefore a full brother to Soldiers Chorus and Cherubini. He was bred by bis owner, Mr J. F. Buchanan, and won tho Publicans’ Handicap at the corresponding meeting last year. He has performed fairly well at small meetings in the Sooth Island. The death occurred recently of the stallion Bonnie Chief, the sire of John o' Groats, Lady Hope, and other winners. By some means the son of Wallace and Bonnie Rosette fractured his spine, and had to be destroyed. While working at Flemington last week Bobadea wrenched one of hu> legs, which filled, and tho horse was immediately scratched > for his V.R.C. engagements. He is still in the Sydney Cup. The appellation of Sailor King has been bestowed upon the three-year-old gelding by King’s Guest from HALS. Pinafore. _He is a half brother to Loch Mabin. The Achilles—Lady Helen colt, purchased by Mr Durmott at the Waikanae sale, was shod last week, and is said to bo the biggest yearling in the Ellerslie district. ■ ■ Merton, who won the Telephone Handicap at Woodyille yesterday /’'was tho outsider of the field. Ho was formerly owned by Mi E. J. Watt, and is by Merriwee—Rose Seaton.
