UPPER HUTT
THE WATER SUPPLY. (Own Correspondent.) At a meeting of the Upper Hutt Town Board on Monday night, the ten-der-of Messrs Andrews, Kennedy, and Gosse was accepted for the construction of the waterworks and the reticulation of the township. There were eleven tenders, the lowest being that of Messrs Andrews, Kennedy and Gosse, which amounted to £9309 for 8-inch spiral pipes and £9966 for Eng-lish-manufactured mains, the latter being decided on. The highest tenders were £13,532 for 8-inch pipes, £14,338 for 9-inch pipes, and £16,081 for 10inch pipes. It was pointed out that 8-inch pipes supplied Invercargill and Masterton, “and it was decided that they would be used in Upper Hutt, with 9-inch pipes at the intake. A loan of £II,OOO has been secured from the Public Trust Office at 6 per cent., which covers interest and sinking fund, the board having a right to redeem the loan by multiples of £IOO after five years.' An examination of the supply creek on Sunday last showed that more water was coming down the creek than was the case with the Wamui supply after a similar period of dry weather. The approximate area of the reservoir reserve is 140 acres, and the normal daily flow of the supply stream is fifty thousand gallons. A distributing basin capable of holding fifty thousand B" a is to bo constructed of reinconcrete, the estimated water pressure being 1201 bto the inch. The reservoir will be distant about three miles from the township, and complete reticulation of every street is anticipated, the subsidiary leads from the ■B-inch main being 3-inch pipes, with li-inoh pipes in the sparsely settled areas.
