PAY OF TEACHERS

ALTERATIONS RECOMMENDED. Several recommendations of general interest were made by the conference of principals of training colleges and boards of advice, which has just concluded its deliberations in. Wellington. Mr G. Hogben (Inspector-General of Schools) presided at the conference. Dr W. J. Anderson (Assistant- Inspector-Gen-eral) and Mr T. H. Gill, M.A., LL.B. (Inspector of Secondary Schools), also, were in attendance as represntatives of the Education Department. THE SALARIES QUESTION. The conference decided to recommend the Minister to alter the scale of salaries for assistants, lecturers, and instructors at training colleges, so that instead of there being provision for one at a minimum salary of .£2lO and a maximum of £240, one at £l3O to £2lO, two at .£l5O to £ 180, two at <£l2o to £l5O, and two at £OO to £l2O, there will be two £2lO to £240, three'at £l3O to £2lO, and three at £l5O to £IBO. WOMEN AND THE BOND. On the motion of Mr E. K. Mnlgan (Auckland), it was resolved: “That the length of time for which a student shall be required to enter into a bond to teach after having completed a course at a training college should not, in the case of women, exceed two years, provided that the two years in question be those immediately following the completion, of the course.” EDUCATION IN "HONOURS" SUBJECT. Mr J. S. Tennant (Wellington) moved: “That in view of the importance of the subject and tlio large number of -teachere now on the rolls of our university colleges this conference considers that 'education* should now bo made a full honours subject/* . Mr T. K. Fleming (Wellington) seconded the motion, which was earned, UNCE RTIFICATED TEACHERS. On the motion of Dr Anderson (Wellington), seconded by Mr C, R. D. Richardson (Dunedin), it was resolved: i-hat it should be regarded as the duty of the training colleges to make provision for the assistance of unoertiiicated teaeheis by means of correspondence classes and otherwise, and that the regulations be amended accordingly to enable this work to be undertaken." , , , These resolutions will be forwarded to the Minister as recommendations.
