FIRE BRIGADES

CONFERENCE AT WANGANUI. Press Association. WANGANUI, February 18. The United Fire Brigade Association Conference concluded to-day when the special committee’s reports on medal decorations, whistle signals, gold stars, and benevolent fund were discussed and the remainder of the remits dealt with. The president presented gold stars (twenty-five years’ service) to the following: Foreman F. Eggeling (Hokitika), Fireman F. McGregor (Hokitika), Fireman C. R. F. Dumoulin (Rangiora), Fireman A. J. Miller nangiora), Secretary L. Anderson (Hastings), Fireman A. Armit (Roslyn), Fireman J. Holland (Timaru), Fireman E. Townsend (Wanganui), Fireman W. Blagdon (South Dunedin), and Fireman T. Pickard (Southbrook). The election of officers resulted; President, Superintendent Spriggens, Wanfanui; vice-presidents. Captain Campell and vice-president Salmond; treasurer and secretary, Scantlebury; auditor, P. R. Fraser. The delegates were to-day entertained at a citizens’ luncheon. The Accident Assurance Society held its twenty-first annual meeting, President Bellringer (New Plymouth) presiding. The annual report stated that though claims had been heavy the funds had increased and there was now a satisfactory balance. Ninety-five brigades were affiliated, with a membership of 1762. The revenue last year was £320 15s, an increase of £47 2s fid, and the total payments were £193. The society’s accumulated funds total £IBSO 19s 9d, an increase of £127 11s 9d. The heaviest claims made on the society were from brigades employing permanent men, whose claims totalled £l5B 6s. It was decided that the financial year should end on December 31st in accordance with the friendly societies’ annual returns. Captain Bolston (Inglewood) was elected president unopposed, and Lieutenant Mulvihill and Sub-su-perintendent Wildish were elected vicepresidents. Secretary Scantlebury, T. J. Watts, and P. R. Fraser were reelected treasurer, secretary, and auditor respectively.
