AT LOGGERHEADS WITH CITY COUNCIL. Frees Association. AUCKLAND, February 18. The taxi-cab drivers of Auckland have incurred the sad displeasure of the City Council, and a big batch is to be carpeted on Thursday morning next to give a reason why they should not be suspended for a breach of the city by-laws. The taxi-cab traffic of Auckland has grown greatly in the last year or two, and there are some 150 cars plying for hire. , The regulation of the traffic, and the fixing of the scale of charges comes within the province of the council, and the rate decided upon was Is per mile, or 12s 6d per hour. The taxi-cab proprietors decided that the fee mentioned was not sufficiently remunerative, and resolved to' fix their own charges accordingly. Hence the trouble which has arisen.
