CHIEF RABBI
RABBI HERTZ ELECTED. (Received February 17, 3.26 p.m.) LONDON, February 17. Rabbi Hertz, of New York, has been elected Chief Rabbi of Britain, in succession to the late Dr Adler, by 298 votes, against Rabbi Hyamson, who secured 39 votes. A London message dated January 14th said: The committee entrusted with the selection of a Chief EaUbi in succession to the late Dr Adler has recommended the election of Kabbi Hyamson, or Rabbi Hertz, urging the latter for preteronce. The decision is unlikely to give satisfaction in the Jewish community, as the controversy continues, on account of the two candidates named refusing to retire in favour of Rabbi Drachmaun. The “Jewish Chronicle,'' referring to the selection of a Chief Rabbi, says it is hoped Bahjbi Hyamson will retire, and so avoid a contest. The Electoral College (the paper adds) will meet on February 16th. when Lord Rothschild will preside.
