CLAIM FOR FREEHOLD
TO COAL-BEARING LAND.
PRIME MINISTER SERVED WITH ' A SUMMONS.
Acting on behalf of Messrs Hall, Stout, and Lillicrap, solicitors, Invercargill, Messrs Wnlord and Levi yesterday served on tho Prime Minister (Hon. W. F. Massey,), as Minister ot Lands, an originating summons in regard to the disputed icaso-in-perpotuity Hold by Mr Gavin Brighton over coalbearing lands in Southland. Mr Brighton seeks to compel tho Lauds Department to grant him, under the Act passed last session, a freehold title of these coal-hearing areas. Tho process of writ served on the Hon. W. F. Massey was by way of an originating summons for tho purpose of seeking before tho Supreme Court an authoritative interpretation of tho provisions of the statute. These proceedings will bo taken under tho Declaratory Judgments Act, and it is uncertain as yet whether legal argument will ho heard at Invercargill or Wellington.
