' THEFT CASE. PRISONER REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. Kenneth Green appeared before Mr Justice Chapman yesterday for sentence on a charge of theft from the person. I Mr Wilford said the accused was twenty-One years of ago and hitherto Tiad borne an unblemished character. His father had written to him (Mr .Wilford) concerning tho boy, making certain suggestions. There was some subtraction from the normal in this His Honor: He is weak-minded. Mr Wilford, after handing Us Honor the letter, said that it was sugf jested the boy should go home to his ather. Ho would bo met at Frankton Junction and taken homo and looked after. His Honor said he did not tlilnn punishment in tho ordinary sense was any use in this case, and it was always very difficult to know what to do. He had had these family suggestions before, and as a rulo they .were worth very little. Many made proposals that they found they were unable to carry out. What surety was there that tho prisoner would be lookedafter and controlled? Mr Wilford said it would perhaps be a little hard on a man to enter into * bond for tho behaviour of one .who was mentally weak. , .His Honor pointed out that bonds wove entered into for tho release of Mime people from mental hospitals, Mr Wilford: That is so. ll;s Honor said he thought the case .-•ad. better stand over until ho con■.■dcied what was best to be done with cliu prisoner, and Mr Wilford couia see him in chambers about it. Ho did not know whether this was a case for probation, or for simply deferring sentence, or for some form of suretyship. Mr Wilford said he would communicate with the prisoner’s father on. tho matter. CIVIL SESSIONS. SETTLEMENT ARRIVED AT. Mr Myers informed his Honor Mi Justice Chapman yesterday that the case of George Luke v. Kenneth Douglas, for declaration, etc., had boon settled.
