Councillor Piper desired to move an amendment to a motion at last night’s meeting of the Petone Borough Council, when the Mayor said he had already spoken to the motion and could not do so. Councillor Piper then left the council chamber, remarking as he did so, “If you desire to gag members of the council because an amendment does not suit you, I decline to sit at the table.” Later the Mayor, Mr McEwan, said he did not decline to accept Councillor Piper’s amendment, but merely mentioned the fact that he had waived his right.
