THE SLAUGHTERMEN
WORK AT PETONE AND NGAHAURANGA. There were over sixty butchers working at the Gear works, Petone, on Saturday. Applications for “hooks” are still coming in, but only men who have had some experience in slaughtering are being engaged. A number of lambs were put through on Saturday morning. ' The pelts on lambs being more delicate than those of full grown sheep, tested tho capabilities of the slaughtermen, and the result was highly satisfactory. The tally for the half r day’s slaughtering was just over 1000. j More butchers start to-day, and' on Tuesday a commencement will he made with tho killing of cattle. At Ngahauranga between forty and fifty slaughtermen have “hooks,” and the tally is gradually mounting up. On Friday fifteen bodies of beef were turned out exceedingly well, and on Saturday a further twenty were handled and finished before 10 o’clock in. tho morning.
