VICE-REGAL GARDEN PARTY

On Saturday afternoon his Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool gave their first large function at Government House, which took the form of a garden party. There can be no more perfect spot, for such a form of entertainment in Wellington than the present Government House grounds. On Saturday, after threatening a deluge, the weather relented, but apparently could not resist sending along a little wind, so that everyone was glad to obtain the shelter afforded by the verandah and large bow windows of the house, and were quite pleased to go indoors to tea; but it was not too chilly to prevent many of the guests strolling about the lawn, where many chairs had been placed for their convenience, and enloying the garden. A military band played at some distance from the house, and the guests were received by the Governor, and Lady Liverpool on the terrace in front of the verandah. Tea, iced coffee, and champagne cup were served in the ballroom, where a buffet had been placed along one side and at the end of the room. Tall vases of iink and white lilies stood about, and cno small dais was banked with palms and ferns. In the drawingrooms. were vases of very fine gladioli in various shades of pink and red. The Countess of Livetpppl wore a soft clinging gown of yellow voile, appliqued with white, and a black hat, trimmed with tulle and ospreys; Miss Eoljambe, who had just returned from Milford Bound, wore blue and white muslin, the skirt fulled in pannier style and a straw hat with fawn and blue roses; Mrs Massey wore grey voile with self-coloured embroidery, and a grey toque with pink flowers;'Mrs Eolleston wore black charmeuse. the basqued coatee edged with uuohings, and a black hat; Mrs E.
