He recently paid an extended visit with Professor Gil ruth to the Northern Territory, and will deal in bis lecture with , the “Never Never Laud, ’ illustrated by kinematograph pictures. - Captain W. McDowall, of the Lain Wakatipu steam service, was farewelled by the steamer employees on the Barnslaw on the occasion of his leaving the service for the north. Captain McDowall, in reply, said he much regretted leaving his fellow-workers, but he was not sorry to part with a service (the steamer is under the control ol the Railway Department) which did not sufficiently recognise promotion oi adequately remunerate those who advanced in it. The late Mr A. Elliott, Collector ol Customs at Christchurch, who died suddenly at Wanganui this week while on a visit there, was a native of Nelson, where his‘father, Mr Charles Elliott, was the founder of the old Nelson “Examiner” newspaper. As a youth Mr Elliott entered the service of tha Customs Department in his native town, and served successfully in various capacities at Westport, Napier, Dunedin, Greymouth, and again at Nelson. In 1892 he was appointed Collector at Wanganui, a post he held till about four-years ago, when ho was appointed Collector at Christchurch. Mr David John Kenny, who. for twenty-three years had been associated with hotelkeeping businesses in Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington, died at bis residence, 91, Brougham street, yesterday. Mr Kenny was born in 1841 at Newcastle West, County Limerick, Ireland. He came out to Victoria in 1865, and took up his residence at Ballarat, where rich goldfields had been discovered in 1851. Three years later he came to New Zealand, and proceeded to Hokitika, where gold was being procured in highly payable quantities. Mr Kenny, whose wife died three years ago, had been in failing health for the last twelve months. Me leaves one son and a daughter—Mr D. A. Kenny and Mrs Horrman Lewis, Lower Hutt. Mr Archibald G. Anderson, eldest son of the late Mr Archibald Miles Anderson, M.1.0.E., Glasgow, died in Wellington Hospital on Saturday morning, aged thirty-one. years, the deceased, who bad been in ill-health for some time, was of a literary turn of mind, and contributed some clever sketches to various journals. He also did some good black and white work. The deceased, who was admitted to tha hospital on Friday night and died early on Saturday morning, designed the “ Hospital Saturday ” • poster, • from which souvenir postcards were struck off. When, the news of his sad death became known, there was increased interest given to his little work, copies of which sold very largely amongst the general public.
