ORGANISATION OF FARMING INTERESTS

A CANTERBURY RESOLUTION. At Thursday’s meeting of the Canterbury A. and P. Society a resolution was moved. “That for the purpose of organising tho persons engaged m the agricultural and pastoral industries m New Zealand it is necessary that a chamber of agriculture should be foriueu. and that such chamber should consist of, hy having affiliated to it, all associations or bodies which are concerned or interested in such xndustrSpoaking to the motion, Mr Hall said that at present there was a great dissipation of energy, duo to the loose term of organisation that prevailed. Some of tho associations were pulling on© way and some another j as a result the industry was not getting that consideration to which its paramount importance entitled it. Before his departure from New. Zealand, Lord Islington had written to him, expressing surprise at the lack of organisation among the farmers, and making several valuable Suggestions. Members would realise the tremendous importance of the industry when he pointed out that about Sp per cent, of New Zealand’s exports wore agricultural products. Such a chamber as he was suggesting would be able to tender to the various associations or to the Government much good advice relative to such matters as agricultural education. Such a chamber would not interfere with the valuable work done by the Farmers’ Union. That body would still have valuable work to its hand. The chamber would comprise delegates from all interested bodies. It would be an influential body, and there was a need for it. At the present time the agricultural and pastoral interests of the community were badly in need of organisation of all agricultural and pastoral associations. If farmers’ unions, dairy associations and stockbreeders’ associations joined together to advance this project, nothing but good would result.
