RELIEF FUNDS

LONDON, February 12. ■ The Lord Mayor of Liverpool has opened a fund for the dependants of those of the Scott expedition who perished. (Received February 13, 8.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 13. CHRISTCHURCH, February 13, The Mayor of Christchurch to-day stated that as Christchurch had practically been the headquarters of the various Antarctic expeditions, and as a large number of citizens had become personally acquainted with members of this expedition, he thought Christchurch people would like to have an’ opportunity of contributing to a national fund. In order to give them that opportunity he had decided to open a list at the City Council office, and ho would be glad to receive subscriptions. It was probable that the fund he was starting might be made a New Zealand fund. He was Communicating with the Mayors of the other cities with the idea of making it a combined movement. Tho money collected would be cabled Home to the main fund as a contribution from New Zealand. While he believed that the fund would be very largely contributed to in England and elsewhere it was, nevertheless, the duty of New Zealanders to do their share in complying with the dying wish of the lost leader, Mr T. Wallace, Consul for Italy, called on the Mayor to-day to express on behalf of the people of Italy their sympathy with the relatives of tho dead explorers. TIMARU, February 13. A start has been made with the Scott fund. The sum of £lO has been sent anonymously to the "Herald” office, and other sums have followed. DANNEVIRKE, February 13. The “ Evening News” has opened a fund for the benefit of relatives of the Antarctic heroes. Subscription lists on tho show grounds met with a ready response, Mr James Armstrong heading it with £2O. The “News” suggests that the funds collected in various parts be amalgamated and regarded as a national _ memorial to the sacredness of home ties.
