BAD BOY BANBURY

ATTEMPT TO EoCAPE FROM MOUNT EDEN GAOL. Press ’ Association. AUCKLAND. February 13. Tha Australian youth, Edward Charles Banbury, who created some interest two or three weeks back by escaping from the exercise yard at the Auckland police station, last, night made an effort to test the capacity ot Mount Edon Gaol to keep people in. After his recapture he had been sent on to the Supreme Court, and for breaking and entering was sentenced to one year’s hard labour and five years’ reformatory detention. He started his sentence yesterday morning, after having been spoken to by Gaoler Ironside, and given to understand tho value of good conduct in tho manner of earning remission of sentence. At 2 o’clock this morning the night watchman in the gaol discovered that Banbury had broken the glass of his cell window, and had made an effort to displace one of the bars. “I’m very sorry; X couldn’t prevent myself,” whimpered tho undersized little chap when he was brought before Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., this 'morning. ' Asked’ why he couldn’t help it, ho replied that he had been told that “ if he escaped gaol people wouldn’t worry about him.” The gaoler stated that prisoner this morning tried to make himself sick by chewing salt. The magistrate pointed out to prisoner that this conduct, if persisted in, would only ensure his serving full sentence at reformatory, with additions, whereas if he settle 1 down and be haved himself decently he would probably find the reformatory period of his sentence reduced. On this occasion he would be simply warned.
