BUSH FIRES SUBSIDING
Bress Association. GISBORNE, February 18. Tjig men sent by Mr Tulloch to help Mr Turnbull at Mangatu succeeded in getting through after much difficulty. They found Turnbull sinking from exhaustion after battling w ith names creeping round his house. The iroolshed had been burned. The men and Turn* bull fought the flames all night, and to-day are suffering severely from heat and smoke, being completely .blind. But for the men's timely arrival yes* terday, Turnbull must have perished. It is feared the loss of stock is considerable. _ . The wind having dropped, the position in the country districts where the bush fires were raging is better this morning. No estimate can yet be formed of the losses of stock, the «©t~ tiers having been baffled by smoke. The fire is easily the largest that has yet occurred in the district#
