HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The Hutt County Council met yesterday. Present: Messrs W. Galloway (chairman), Councillors J. Wakeham, T. Edwards, J. Whiteman, M. W. Welch and W. J. Howell. . The inspector of works (Mr J. W. Cudby) reported that about 80 feet of wire and stone crates had been put in at Maori bank to prevent further encroachment by the river. The additional width to Duck Creek bridge and tho erection of the now bridge on Belmont road, both in Horokiwi riding, had boon completed during the month. An old retaining wall near Mr Milne’s place had been carried away and tho road at that point was now in danger of sharing a similar fate unless attended to before the winter. The bridge on Main road at Stokes’ Valley needed redeoking, and he had ordered a quantity of planking for tho purpose. Numerous inquiries had bfeen made as to when tho temporary bridge on tho western side of Paekakariki Hill was to bo done away with, the angle being so acute that it was considered dangerous. Ho recommended that a 4 by 4ft Australian hardwood culvert .he put in and the hollow filled up. , In tho Mangakatnkutuku Valley, about la chains of tlie road had been washed away. The report was adopted. Tho Manawatu Automobile Association wrote regarding the dangerous crossing over the railway at Paraparau-mu.—-It was decided to put a notice in a conspicuous place warning motorists of tho danger. Tho doputy-Pnhlic Trustee, wrote asking tho council who had jurisdiction below the high water line, and it was decided to inform him that the Marine Department was the controlling body. The Bruce County Council in a letter suggested • that hospital and charitable aid board levies should bo provided from the Consolidated Fund. Tho council decided to support the suggestion. Mr W. G. Fisher wrote pointing out that storm water swamped his land in the Plimmerton extension, and he asked tho council to have tho matter remedied.—lt was decided to refer the letter to the chairman and inspector. Messrs Seaton, Sladdcn and Pavett forwarded specifications of Pitoitoi road and tlie zig-zag footpath at Day s Bay for the Wellington Steam Ferry Co. These were approved of. It was decided to have the necessary building by-laws framed regarding the width of sections on which buildings may be constructed. The following tenders were approved of: For metal for Akatarawa road, Mabey Bros., 3s 9d per yard; for constructing opjiroachcs to Moonshine bridge, Andrews and Gosse, £248 10s. There were two other tenders for this .bridge work, but they were informal as their deposits were less than the amount specified. _ Accounts amounting to £2425 10a lOd were passed for payment.
