(By "Eileen.”) February 11. Mrs D’Arcey, who has been spending a holiday at the Mountain House, has returned. Miss Menli has returned from her trip to Manaia. Mr Howarth, engineer to the Harbour Board, left on Friday on an extensive trip to Europe. He is accompanied by Mrs Howarth. What might have been a series of fatal accidents happened at onr sea beach on Sunday, when no fewer than eight nereons were saved from drowning. The majority of the Surf Club members were at an up river picnic, only the junior team being on the beach. Of these M. Richardson, E. Perrett, and F. Gower were responsible for saving the whole eight, who were certainly in serious difficulties. The beach was dangerous in many parts, one or two new holes being discovered, and the rescuers were without the life line. The three lads were thoroughly exhausted after their gallant work and rescues, and were physically incapable of further action. Four of the eight brought ashore recovered only after resnscitative methods had been used.At a meeting of the Plunket nursing committee held on Monday in the Council Chambers, there were present—Mrs (Dr) Porritt (vice-president) in the chair, Mesdames Stevenson, D’Arcey, Reeve, Dempsey, Veitch, Comyns, Powell, and Cameron. The nurse takes up her duties on Wednesday. A number of minor details were arranged. . On Saturday the master builders cave their annual picnic up river at Hipango Park. The large river steamer, Manuwai, was chartered for the day. There were about 260 on board. The day was a perfect one, and all arrangements for catering were in the capable hands of Dustin’s. Ltd., and justice was thoroughly done to the good things provided. The City Band, under Conductor Buckley, were present and dispersed enjoyable music. Sports of all description were arranged for the children. The president of the association, Mr Ashwell, thanked all for their presence, and hoped they had thoroughly enjoyed the outing.
