LONDON MARKETS Reporting on January 3rd, the Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company, Ltd., London! states: During Christmas week the quantity of meat pitched on Smithfield Market showed a decrease when compared with the corresponding period last year. Naturally at this season buyers’ attention is directed chiefly towards poultry, and consequently the inquiry for both beef and mutton is limited accordingly. The demand for turkeys has not been equal to the supply, and it is reported that some of the wholesale, dealers have had to face heavy losses. The value of chilled South American beef has fallen considerably during the

period ■under review, tie drop being Id per lb on. tie average quality binds, but on the prime hind-quarters the difference is fully 1-W per lb. Hard beef haa not suffered as the quantity marketed was limited. English beef is selling at about id per lb lower, to-day’s quotations being 5.(i to £id per lb, but the value of Scotch is unchanged. Irish beef is now arriving in limited quantities, and prices are quoted round about sjd to 6d per lb. Both pork and veal are scarce and prides Very firm. New Zealand Mutton. - There have been no arrivals during the past two Weeks, but the Wbakarua is now' in tho river with about 24,001) carcases of mutton on board which constitute the first shipment of the season. The supply of New Zealand sheep on hand is. chiefly North Island, find, in spite . of poor Christmas trade generally, prices have hardened, the average for the past week being fully 4|d per lb. It is reported that Canterbury ebeep for forward shipment are being offered c.i.f. at this price. • Australian Mutton.—Tho receipts for the fortnight amount to 146,488 carcases, and ruling prices for good brands are 4d to 4id per lb, Which should be a satisfactory figure for the importer. The total quantity alloat of 'about 430,000 carcases probably represents the height of the season’s shipments, and will no doubt go readily into. consumption. Frozen Lamb.—The quantity received consists of 73 carcases from New Zealand, 142,102 carcases from Australia, and 70,009 carcases from South America. The stock of old season’s lambs is now about exhausted, and Australian iambs of good quality are inquired for, aim sell readily at about Sid to 6Jd per lb for tho best ouality. ‘ ± rozen Beef.—Arrivals comprise 14,32-i Quarters from Australia,'b2,b7l quarters frozen and #6,61# clililed from South America. Beet generally ©old badly during the Christmas period, but the crop in price was only conspicuous in respect to chilled beef. Hard beef was not pressed tor sale, and prices show only a slight dodine at 3rd to 3 S d per lb for hindquarters, tore-qdartors being unchanged. COMMERCIAL CABLES By Telegraph—Prim) Association— Copytlfhi SILVER. LONDON, February 10., Bar silver is quoted at 23 7-16 d per ounce standard. 1 PRICE OP FLOUR ADVANCES. S YD NET. February 11. There is no change, to report in the local wheat market, the principal business passing. being in wheat grown, in the northern district, which is changing hands in cases where the grower is willing to accept ruling. price. Oats are easier, as there is no outlet at present. Outside price is Is lid ter Gortons. Though the tew growers who have any to sell are willing to take this figure, other descriptions are hot as free tjf sale as they were. Bates ruling locally have left little or no margin of profit for shipment, either to the North Island or Australia. The bulk of the barley offering is very light, and maltsters are not purchasing any but prime samples, which still command 4s, while no offers can be got tor light samples. The barley this season, though generally so light, is in excellent condition and colour. BUTTER EXPORT Press Association. AUCKLAND. February IX.
