BOWLING

THE VETERANS’ COMPETITION. LOCKIE vi FREEMAN. A very interesting competition was brought to a close yesterday on the Wellington Club’s green when Messrs Lockie (Wellington) and Freeman (Thorndon) met in the final of the tourney for players of sixty years of ago and upwards. Bowlers turned out m force to witness the contest, a . large number of Thorndon men mustering in support of their representative, while the Wellington veteran, who was on his own green, had many admirers. Tlje prize was a pair of bowls presented by Mr J. J. Roberts, secretary N.B.A. Lockie led off with a two, Freeman responding with a three and a single. Short play by the Thorndon man gave Lockie a chance of bagging a four, but with two singles Freeman put the score six all on the sixth head. Lockie then improved, while Freeman was constantly too short and narrow. As a result, the Wellington man scored 1,2, 1 and lon successive heads. Freeman at last gauged the green and got in two right on the jack, but two to Lockie at the next head made the score 15 to 8 in his favour. Freeman then, sent down three fine shots and in the next head bagged another three, Lockie being too strong. The score was now 15 to 14 in Lockie’s favour, and with a nice trail ho got two the next head. Then came a-single to' Freeman, who looked like forging to tho front at the next end. He ' had two near the jack, but the Wellington man drove and ran the jack into the ditch, bagging a couple, a feat which really won tho game. Freeman next got a brace, malting his score two tc the had with two heads to. go. Lockie drew in two shots fairly wide of the jack and Freeman threw away his chance by driving, with a nice draw open to him. This left Lockie four up with one head to go. Freeman drew a nice shot, but Lockie sent up a good second, and the game was over, Lockie winning by 21 to 18. Both players were warmly applauded for the sterling fight they put up. The loser will be eighty years of age this month, while the winner is some two months younger. JOHNSDNVILLE CLUB. The champion rink tournament wan advanced a further stage on. Saturday.
