CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

RULING VALUES OF EXPORTS. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce met yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs A. E. Mabin (president), T. Ballinger, F. W. Manton, A. Leigh Hunt, A.,S. Biss, E. J. Pilcher, C. Jones, Thompson, and T. C. Dawson. Mr T. O. Dawson moved: “ That the secretary submit a monthly list showing tho ruling export values of staple exports, so that the values in quarterly returns could bo based on tho same, instead of tho present system of checking the completed returns.” The chairman said the matter was a really important one, as they were often told that the imports exceeded tho exports, and that, therefore, the country was going to ruin. At present tho method of assessing tho exports was really guesswork. It was decided that a committee consisting of Messrs Pilcher, Biss, Dawson,*. and tho chairman interview the Secretary of Customs on tho matter. The resolution was held over until next meeting. Messrs F. Dyer, A. C. Croll, and C. Tewsley forwarded their resignations as members of the chamber, and these were accopted.
