STEAMERS REPORT DIFFICULTIES IN NAVIGATING. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 9. Heavy smoke from bush fires in the Poverty Bay and Bay of Plenty districts threatens to delay coastal steamers. The Wanaka, from Timaru and Napier, on Saturday traversed many miles of thick smoke. Occasionally it was impossible to see more than one mile ahead crossing the Bay of Plenty <oi Friday. It was with difficulty the Wanaka picked up Cuvier Island light. The Tarawera, which arrived to-day from southern ports, reported a heavy haze from East Cape to Auckland, and saw extensive fires raging at East Cape. It was impossible to see land more than five miles away. ' The atmosphere in Auckland city and suburbs has been filled with drifting smoke for the last two or three days.
